Generation: 1

  1. 1.  GRIMES Collette was born on 26 Nov 1917 in Franklin, Renville Co., MN (daughter of GRIMES William Louis and BROWN Sarah Jane "Sadie"); died on 06 Aug 1993.

    Notes:

    Died:
Burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, MI.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  GRIMES William Louis was born on 11 Oct 1870 in Sleepy Eye, Brown Co., MN (son of GRIMES William Thomas and DOHENY Catherine).

    Notes:

Sarah Jane Brown, the ninth child of James Brown and Mary Ann goggin,
was born on June 20, 1879 in Norfolk Township, Minnesota near the
village of Birch Cooley. The tenth and last child of James and Mary
Ann, a son, died soon after birth. Like her brothers and sisters,
Sarah's early life was spent on the farm, going to school through the
eighth grade in Norfolk and attending catechism in Henryville. We
have no precise record when Sarah Janes' parents died, the only
record being that James was first buried in Henryville and later was
removed to the cemetery at New Birch Cooley. From this, we surmise
that when Mary Ann died she, too, was buried with her husband in New
    Birch Cooley cemetery.
After finishing the eighth grade in Norfolk, Sarah Jane went to high
school for one year in Bird Island, and then transferred to the
school at Franklin. Sometime after she finished school, Sarah Jane
met a likeable young fellow from Golden Gate, Minnesota, by the name
of Willie Grimes. They started seeing each other regularly, and soon
they were engaged to be married. This event took place on January 15,
1901 at New Birch Cooley. Their married life began on a farm
purchased from Herb Scott. Some eight years later in 1909, Willie,
Sarah and five children left the farm and headed for Great Falls,
Montana, on an immigrant train. Besides the family, they took four
men, four wagons, eight horses and the household furniture. The
children who made the trip were: Mary Edith, Eight years old; James,
six years old; Patrick, four years old; Catherine, two years old and
    the baby, Margaret.
While in Great Falls, Willie, or as he is also know, Bill, did
construction work, but things did not seem to work out right. His
wife, Sarah was in poor health, suffering from a kidney ailment, and
there was also a prevalence of typhoid in the area. Such being the
case, Willie and Sarah decided to retrace their steps to Minnesota,
and so they came to Franklin to live. Bill purchased a livery stable
and had three teams for hire. After some time, he went back to
farming in the Franklin area. Again, the family moved back into town,
and Willie drove a team on a grader. In the meantime, seven more
children were born in this order:Wilfrid, Lorraine, Larry, David,
Collette, Clare, Grace and Lois. During the time, the family lived in
Franklin, James moved to Detroit, Michigan, and opened a drycleaning
plant, which proved to be very successful. During the next several
years, Jim's brothers and sisters joined him in Detroit, and finally
his father and mother. Here, Willie took a job as a guard at the
Burroughs Corporation plant. After several bouts with pneumonia, and
being in his seventies, he finally retired from active work.
As this is written, Willie is still in fairly good health and is
approaching his ninety-third birthday. His wife, Sarah Jane, who is
nearing Eighty-four, continues to enjoy good health and leads an
    active and interesting life.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  (Sr) James Brown was born about 1806 in Ireland; died on 03 Mar 1840 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada.

    Notes:

    Possibly born in Waterford

I have no other info on James Sr. and Catherine but believe they came
as part of the Peter Robinson settlers who were sponsored by the
British government. There were two groups that came to Canada,
originally to the area near Peterborough, Ontario. One group came in
1823 as part of the Peter Robinson immigrants and I believe James
Brown Sr. was one of them. He ended up in Tingwick, Arthabaska, QC.
The second group came in 1825 and I believe Catherine Buckley was
part of that group. I have no proof of this but do have the passenger
lists and there were a James and a Catherine that would have been of
the right age to have been married in1834.
    Bill Grimes

    Birth:
    BET ABT 1803 AND 1810

James married BUCKLEY Catherine about 1831 in St. Patice de Tingwick, Quebec, Canada. Catherine (daughter of BUCKLEY Jacques (James) and MCMAHON Mary) was born in 1812 in County Cork?, Ireland; died on 28 Oct 1837 in St. Michell de Sherbrooke, QC Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  BUCKLEY Catherine was born in 1812 in County Cork?, Ireland (daughter of BUCKLEY Jacques (James) and MCMAHON Mary); died on 28 Oct 1837 in St. Michell de Sherbrooke, QC Canada.

    Notes:

Catherine was part of the 1825 Peter Robinson immigrants.

    Children:
    1. BROWN Ellen was born in 1831 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada; died in 1894 in Old St. Patrick's Cemetery, Birch Cooley, Renville Co., MN.
    2. BROWN Mary was born in 1833; died in 1895.
    3. 6. (Jr) James Brown was born on 03 May 1835 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada; died on 02 Oct 1881 in Norfolk Twp, Renville Co., MN.

  3. 14.  GOGGIN Edmund was born in 1808 in Skull Parish, County Cork, Ireland (son of GOGGIN David); died in 1898 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada.

    Notes:

In Ireland, the year 1810 was not in itself unusual. Things were
neither good nor bad. People went about their work as usual. There
were marriages, births and deaths. Some of the more hardy and
adventerous souls, migrated to America, to them the 'Land of Plenty'.
But to the members of the Brown family, this was, indeed, a most
important year, because it was then that a son was born to the Goggin
Family of County Cork. His name was Edwin, or as he was sometimes
called, Ned, and he is the most remote ancestor about whom we have
any knowledge. About his early life we know nothing. We do know that
he married a lass named Mary Hudnut (also spelled Hodnett) in the
city of Cork. Not long after their marriage, the great potato famine
struck Ireland, and Edwin, his wife Mary and possibly his first
child, David, left Ireland by sailing vessel for America.
Mary's brother, Richard Hudnut, sailed for America at the same time,
but in another vessel. As sailing vessels had to depend on the wind,
they always made for the nearest port. Mary's ship was blown into the
mouth of the St. Laurence River, while that of her brother came into
the harbor at New York. According to our informant, Angela Borne,
Richard became a successful businessman in New York and was probably
the founder of the famous cosmetic company that bears his name. The
only other information concerning this branch of the family, is that
he had an adopted daughter, Virginia, who was one of the many wives
of Rudolph Valentino, movie actor of the 1920's.
Meanwhile, Mary and Edwin settled on a farm in or about Tinwich,
Arthabasha County in the province of Quebec. There, more children
were born, at least five that we have record of, but there may have
been more. In addition to David, who was born in Ireland, there was
Ned, Katie, Anna, Mary Anne, and Joanna. In the year 1890 at the age
of 60, Edwin's wife, Mary died. Her husband followed her soon after
at the age of 80. Both were probably buried in the old church yard
near Tinwich. Edwin, in his later years, became senile, and his only
activity was saying the rosary. A few days before he died, he plucked
off each bead of the rosary while saying it and dropped them on the
floor. He never asked for his rosary again.
While it seems safe to assume that most of Edwin and Mary's children
married, we have records on only two of them. Katie was married to a
man by the name of Mullens, and they had two children, Katie and
Mary. Beyond this we have no information. Mary Anne married James
Brown, and it is with these progenitors that we are concerned in this
family tree. James, Mary Anne's husband, was also born in Canada.
While living in Canada, three children were born to them; James, Mary
Ann and Edmund. When James was six, Mary Ann three and her brother
Edmund, one, the family left Canada. It was in the year, 1868 that
