    Honora 'Honey' Carpenter

WESTPORT — Honora "Honey" Carpenter, 63, passed away March 20, 2009, after a long and determined fight against breast cancer.

Honora was born in the borough of Richmond, Staten Island, N.Y., on July 10, 1945, to William, Sr., and Haleen (Johnson) Smith.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Arthur R. Carpenter; her daughters, Kari and husband, Jim Ratliff, Kathleen Desjardins and partner, John Gereau; stepdaughter, Bonnie, and husband, Steven Lawrence; her brother, William, and wife, Ellen Smith; her cousins, Karen Brown and husband, George "Bucky" Sweatt, and Beverly McIntyre; her grandchildren, Kaleigh Ratliff, Cooper Sayward, Jeff, Eric and Brian Sherman, Steven and David Lawrence and Adam Carpenter; 10 great-grandchildren; her nephews, Matt, Doug, Greg Smith, Brian and Shane Smith; and niece, Leslie Smith.

She was predeceased by her parents; her stepfather, Raymond MacDougal; her brother, Michael Smith; stepson, Michael Carpenter; stepdaughter, Kandyce (Carpenter) Swartfager; and great-grandson, Noah Carpenter.

Honora retired from Essex County Emergency Services as a principal account clerk. She was previously employed as village clerk and clerk to the supervisor in Westport, N.Y., and as a medical transcriber at Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

She was a charter member of Elizabethtown Community Hospital Hospice, which later joined with High Peaks Hospice. In the end, it was Hospice that cared for her, along with her family. Her family appreciates the irony in the fact that her mother, Haleen, brought her into this world and her Hospice nurse, Helene, sang her out. We are grateful to all the caregivers who took such wonderful care of her and who loved her.

There will be calling hours at W.M. Marvin's Sons Inc. in Elizabethtown, N.Y., on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. and a funeral service on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at the Lewis Congregational Church at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at the Cobble Hill Inn Restaurant.

In lieu of flowers, Honey asked that donations be made in her memory to the Essex County High Peaks Hospice, P.O. Box 192, Port Henry, NY 12974.
