    William Wright, an early settler of Swanzey, was killed on his farm in Winchester by the fall of a great beam in a barn in 1810. His son, Luther was born there (Swanzey) and moved to Middlebury, Vt, where he lived for a time, but afterwards returned to Swanzey and died in Winchester, in 1838. He married Rhoda, sister of the Hon. Elijjah Belding, and reared a family of twelve children, two of whom are now living. One son, William, resides on road 17, in this town, is one of the selectmen, and has held the office of justice of the peace since 1850. He was town representative in 1849 and 1850 and has been largely engaged in settling estates, & c.

    William married Graves Mehitable on 27 Aug 1758 in Northfield, Franklin County, MA.   1. 4.  Wright Cyprian was born in 1713 in Sudbury, Middlesex Co., MA (son of Wright Samuel and Stevens Mary); died on 29 Jun 1739 in Rutland, Worcester County, MA.

    Notes:

    Cyprian Wright died by drowning in Muscopog Pond according to the vital records of Rutland, Worcester Co., MA p.255.
    His father, Samuel, died just six months before on January 15, 1739/40.

    He and his family were early inhabitants of Rutland, Worcester county, MA. His father, Capt. Samuel Wright owned Lot # 1 and Cyprian owned Lot # 2.

    Cyprian Wright died at Rutland, intestate, and on 11 July, 1739 an inventory of his property was taken by Joseph Stearns, John Hubbard, and Moses How. The estate came to £ 726 which included stock, house lot # 2, five acres of Pine Plain and a right in undivided lands at Rutland, [2:409] on 24 July 1739, an administrators' bond was issued to Hannah Wright, widow, with Frank Fink, clerk, and William Wright, (brother) yeoman, as sureties, all of Rutland. Hannah signed in her own name. [179:341]

    The administrators' account was dated 16 May 1745 and was submitted by Timothy Brown and Hannah Brown, formerly Hannah Wright. It indicated that the widow has received her thirds and that the other two thirds had beeb divided among the children who were not named, that the eldest son, William receiving double share and the two other children, Samuel and John, receiving single shares.     Samuel Wright, Esq. of Rutland left his entire estate, with the exception of specific cash bequests, to his son, William who was also to be the sole executor. The three sons of Samuel's deceased son, Cyprian, viz: William, Samuel and John, were to receive £10 each when they reached age twenty-one to make up for the part of Cyprian's share he had not received. To his daughters, Samuel left: £25 in one year to Hannah Rice; £25 in two years to Mary Willard; £25 in three years to Dorothy Felps; £15 in four years to Abigail Willard, and 20 shillings to Isabel Frink, all bequests bringing the daughters up to their full shares. Samuel signed his will before John Fletcher, William Fenton and Hezekiah Fletcher on 30 June 1739, and it was allowed on 5 Feb. 1739/40

    Notes:

    It is unknown where Timothy and Hannah were married , but probably in Rutland, Worcester County, MA where she lived with her late husband before he drowned. Timothy owned property in Ware, given him by his father, Thomas. Timothy knew the Wrights well and was well aquainted with Hannah and her first husband, Cyprian Wright, who died by drowning in Muscopog Pond in Rutland in 1738. Cyprian's name was on a land deed of Thomas Brown.

    Hannah brought three children, of which two were minors, to this marriage; William, Samuel and John. John died by the age of 10 years.
    Timothy had to put up a surety bond for these children so he sold some land in Rutland to have money in trust for their care.

    Timothy died 3 Jan. 1770, preceding Hannah in death. She died of small pox in Swanzey, 1776.

  1. 8.  Wright Samuel was born on 09 Apr 1670 in Sudbury, Middlesex Co., MA (son of Wright Edward and Upson Hannah); died about 15 Jan 1739 in Rutland, Worcester County, MA.

    Notes:

    Captain Samuel Wright was prominent among the early settlers of Rutland, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He held the offices of selectman, assessor, clerk of the town and moderator of the meetings for many years, justice of the peace, deacon of the church, captain of the militia and surveyor and committee in dividing the lands of six miles square and recording the same in the proprietors' book, which he did in a very plain and legible hand. Many of the bounds and corners made more than one hundred and fifty years could still be found. Capt. Wright kept a tavern in front of the first meeting-house, on the opposite side of the street, where much of the first business of the town was done. (The old records show that the town would frequently during the session of its town-meeting vote to "adjourn for fifteen minutes," which was quite suggestive.) This house was taken down or removed before the Revolution.

    "Jonas Burke, born Sudbury, Mass, Jan 4., 1683-4; d. Stow Mass. Son of Richard and Mary (Parmenter) Burke. He received to following division of land in his father's estate; land 'butting on ye east with the land of his brother
    John burk on ye south with ye lands of Mr Abraham Holman, westerly with the lands of Stow, northerly with ye lands of Lieut. Ruddock.' 'Of ye movable estate,' 'by one cow, 2:10:00.' He resided in Sudbury and in Stow. As early as the year 1722, he sold land in Sudbury to his brother, John Burk. His inventory is on file, dated March 3, 1729-30. A letter, which is on file, dated Nov. 15, 1739, says, that the oldest son had sold his interest, and is beyond the sea.

    A division and settlement of the estate was made April 10, 1741. Amos Brown, who purchased the estate of Jonas Burke, gave security for that which belonged to Mary, the eldest daughter. Mr. Burke was married at Sudbury, Dec. 23, 1709 to Hannah Johnson. She outlived her husband and administered on the estate."

    Jonas died about 1730. His inventory is on file in Middlesex County, MA, Probate record #3583, May 10, 1730.

    Administrators were Hannah Burke, widow, and Amos Brown, blacksmith, both of Stow and Charles Johnson of Sudbury, wheelwright. Will mentions children; Mary,widow Hannah (of Cyrprian) Wright, Joseph, Abigail, (given land next to Edward Fuller.) Elizabeth, Hepsibeth and Jonas.
