| Notes |
- Daniel was a 32nd degree Mason in the Medinah Temple and a reporter for the Cary news which was submitted to the Crystal Lake Herald. This was written in an article on the early settlers of Cary Station in their local newspaper. He is also mentioned in the article on his parents, Samuel Right and Sally Ann Coss Brown, in the 1968 published " History of McHenry County, IL."
He was born near North Crystal Lake in Algonquin township, McHenry County, IL but at the age of five he and his family moved to the Brown farm two miles north of Cary. In 1875 the familymoved to Cary where he resided until his death in 1912. He attended the district schools and later finished his education at the Elgin Academy, from which he graduated at the age of 20 years in 1880.
He belonged to many lodges and organizations, endearing himself to many acquaintances and friends. He was a highly regarded member of the Cary community. He died by hanging himself in an upstairs bedroom in his home in Cary, IL.
Sometime between 1908 and 1912, he went to Denmark. Upon his return he had given a bracelet he had purchased there probably to Alice, his niece.
He married Ann Barge but nothing more is known about this marriage. No children were mentioned in his obituary so it is unknown if any were ever born to them.

DAN BROWN DEAD
_______________
Well Known McHenry County Man
MEMBER OF MANY LODGES

Kind Hearted and Generous, He was Ever Ready to Lend a
Helping Hand

Daniel McCurdy Brown, son of Samuel R. and Sally A. Brown, was born near North Crystal Lake, Ill. , May 2, 1860, and died at his home in Cary, Jan. 11, 1912, aged 51 years.
At the age of 5 years he removed with his parents to the Brown farm, two miles north of Cary, where he attended the district school, and afterward finished his education at the Elgin Academy, from which he graduated at the age of 20 years.
Ten years later the family moved to Cary and here he resided until his deathh. In his departure there passed from our midst one of our best and most respected citizens. Of a cheerful, obliging disposition, he was beloved by all who had the privilege of his acquaintance. No one was ever more ready with a helping hand in case of need than "Dan," and he will be sadly missed by his neighbors and many friends outside his immediate family circles. He was active in every movement, looking to the best interest of Cary and its inhabitants, giving ungrudgingly of his time and means, and he was a friend whose kindly advice was much sought. His death has caused a vacancy in our midst which cannot soon be filled.
He leaves three sisters--Mrs. M. Osgood and Julia Brown of Cary, Mrs. Dora Raue of Crystal Lake and three brothers--Melvin Brown of Cary, S. R. Brown of Dupree, Dak., D. E. Brown of Wauconda, Ill., for all of whom much sincere sympathy is felt throughout this community.
He was active in fraternal societies, being a member of Nunda lodge No. 169, A. F. and A. M., Woodstock chapter No. 36, R. A. M., Mt. Calvary Commandery No. 25, K. T. and Medinah Temple, A. A. O. U. M. S., Chicago, M. W. A. , Cary camp No. 659 and R. N. A. camp No. 249, in all of which he was recognized for his brotherly qualities and high standards.
His funeral was held on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 2:30 p.m., at the M. E. church, Rev. C. E. Spalding officiating and Rev. C. D. King and wife of Norwood Park furnishing the music. About 30 full uniformed Sir Knights of Mr. Calvary Commandery No. 25 of Woodstock, with Em. Sir D. M. Wellington as prelate then held the Templar service. The service is always beautiful and the impressive manner of rendition on this occasion must have seemed the more so to the relatives and friends present, as was evidenced by the tear-stained eyes on every hand. The Commandery escorted by Nunda lodge No. 169, A. F. and A. M., then conveyed the body to the Cary cemetery, where the final rites over the remains of the well-known and well-beloved brother were held.
