| Notes |
- Jean was the son of Robert of Pierrepont and Montaigu and his wife Eustachia the eventual heiress of the county of Roucy after her brothers Raoul and Jean. About the year 1212 Jean inherited Roucy from his mother, later acquiring the viscounty of Mareuil upon the death of his childless sister who had inherited it from their mother. In 1217 he accompanied the future king Louis VIII of France on his unsuccessful venture in England.
He was first married in 1224 to Isabelle (Elisabeth) a daughter of Robert II of Dreux, a childless marriage that ended in 1235 on the grounds of consanguinity.
A second marriage was contracted in November 1238 with Jeanne de Dampierre but appears not to have taken place or been annulled as both parties later found other spouses.[1]
His last marriage circa 1240 was to Marie de Dammartin with whom he had two children a son Jean who succeeded him as Count of Roucy, and a daughter Marie or Mathilde who married Jean de Garlande seigneur de Possesse. In 1251 he went to the aid of Marguerite of Flanders as part of the Champagne contingent, dying in Flanders that same year.[2]
Research notes
The consanguinity which was the basis for the dissolution of his marriage to Isabelle de Dreux appears to be their common descent from Godefroi de Namur and his wife Ermesinde of Luxembourg who were the second great-grandparents of both parties -making them third cousins. If there was a nearer relationship between the couple it would have to come from as yet unidentified persons in their trees.
