She bore him 10 children. Mabel was said to be an extremely strong willed woman, shrewd, politically adept, but also cruel. She was murdered at Bures Castle by one Hugh Bunel and his accomplices. Her son, Hugh de Montgomery who was at Bures Castle when she was murdered there, pursued them in vain, they having broken down the bridges behind them as they fled. The pursuit was further hindered by the winter floods.
