Elenor Jane, known as "Jane", is buried in City Hill Cemetery, Dresden, Yates
County, NY next to her husband, William "Henry" Harrison Brown, her son, John and Charles Volney; her brothr-in-law and her mother-in -law, Eunice M. Annable Brown.

Jane's father and mother's plot (Uriah and Fanny Townsend) adjoins the W. H Brown plot. Several of her children, Adelaide and Albert H. Brown, are buried in the Townsend plot.

William (son of Brown Samuel Right (Wright) and Annable Eunice Mary) was born on 10 Oct 1814 in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY; died on 25 Aug 1893 in Naples, Ontario County, NY; was buried in City Hill Cemetery, Torrey, Yates Co., NY. Charles Volney went by the name of Volney, according to the 1870 Census report for Torrey, Yates Co. NY.

The family lived in Romulas, Seneca County, NY during the 1880 Federal census. In 1910, he was living in Geneva, Ontario county, NY where John A. Staysa and wife, Juliett, Emmett's sister lived.

Emmett and his children, Gertrude and Fred, were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ovid, Seneca co., NY in the 1870s. Aslo listed was a Priscilla Brown. Had he remarried to this woman?

Emmett, age 67, is listed in the 1910 census for Geneva, Ontario County, NY as a widower and worked as a porter at a sanitarium.

In 1920, he is living with his son, Fred H. Brown in Denver, CO.
Erasmus moved from NY to Denver, Colorado and was still living there in 1923 as was stated in his brother, Jeff's obituary.

Emmett married Wilson Jennie Delia on 03 Aug 1870 in Romulas, Seneca County, NY. Jennie was born on 22 Apr 1854 in NY; died in 1885 in Romulus, Seneca County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Death of J. T. Brown

It is doubtful if the death of any person could have caused more regret than that of Jefferson T. Brown, who passed away at his home at “Home Comfort” on West Main street, Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock. Mr. Brown had been in poor health for the past six weeks, having had an attack of appendicitis and owing to his advanced age the doctors thought best not to operate for. He seemed to be improving nicely until the death of his sister, Mrs. J. A. Staysa, and from that time he gave up interest in life and gradually sank away.

Mr. Brown was born in Scips, Seneca County, [corrected, possibly by Fred H. Brown, to say Milo, Yates County] March 30, 1850, and was the son of William H. and Jane Eleanor Brown. He had spent the greater part of his life in Yates and Ontario counties where he was in the hotel business for about forty-three years.

There are many interesting facts in regards to Mr. Brown’s connection with the hotel business, one being that he himself was a man of strict temperate habits, and his hotels were always known for their high character, and many a traveling man has been known to exclaim that they would go twenty miles in order to put up at the Brown Hotel. Mr. Brown was also much interested in good horses, and was able to give the pedigree of many of the best ones.

When about twenty one years of age Mr. Brown was united in marriage to Miss Alice Stebbins of Branchport, who died about twelve years ago.

Seven years ago Mr. Brown came to Alden to live and during that time has made himself generally liked because of his kind, courteous, and gentlemanly manners and while of a good nature, he made many friends.

Mr. Brown leaves to mourn his death one brother Emmett E. Brown of Denver, Colo., and a sister, Miss Mary M. Brown of Alden, also a brother-in-law, John A. Staysa.

In accordance with his wishes a brief funeral was conducted from his home Monday morning at 8 o’clock and his remains were taken to Gorham and buried in the family lot in the village cemetery.


In the 1880 census, Jeff and his wife, Alice, were living with his father and mother in Milo, Yates county,NY. Both he and his father were in the hotel business.

Thomas married Stebbins Alice M. in 1871. Alice was born about 1853; died about 1911 in Gorham, Ontario County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1910 Federal census for Naples, Ontario County, NY, Mary is a housekeeper at her brother's hotel. She was still unmarried and 58 years old. By 1930, she was back in Milo, Yates County, NY where she was a resident in a nursing home. She is buried in the Brown family plot next to her brother, Thomas Jefferson Brown, in the New Gorham Cemetery, Gorham, Ontario County, NY.

Juliette was a twin sister to John Henry Brown. She was known as Ettie.

Juliette married Staysa John A. in 1890. John was born in Mar 1854 in PA; died in 1931 in Gorham, Ontario County, NY; was buried in New Gorham Cemetery, Gorham, Ontario County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Gertrude married Smith Morris T. in 1896. Morris was born in 1875; died in 1915. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Mary M. Brown remained a single woman all her life. She lived in Milo, Yates County where she was born but later moved to Alden, Ontario County, NY.
