  1. 2.  FREEMAN Charles Etson was born on 11 Jun 1869 in Westport, Essex Co., NY (son of FREEMAN George Henry and MCDONOUGH Mary); died on 05 Feb 1951 in Franklin, Renville Co., MN.

    Notes:

In 1909 the firm of Poss and Freeman rented out their vacuum cleaner
by the day - the easy way to clean the house without taking up the
    carpets.

The firm of Poss and Freeman, one of the oldest firms in Franklin,
dissolved partnership in January 1915. Poss took over the hardware
and farm implement business and Freeman took the furniture and lumber
part of the business. The men were in partnership for 19 years. The new
store name was "Freeman Furniture, Lumber and Undertaking."

In 1918, the flu epidemic continued throughout the year, and many
deaths were attributed to the dread disease. To curb the spread of
the flu, public gatherings were stopped and funerals were not allowed
to be held in the churches. This was an order received by C.E.
Freeman, the local undertaker. Mayor L.H. Kirwin ordered schools
closed and all activities cancelled for the month of November.

In 1950, H.J. Poss bought the Freeman Lumber Yards from C.E. Freeman.
The purchase included several sheds, lumber and material. In August,
The Freeman Furniture Store was sold to Leanard McAdams of St. Peter.
Mr. McAdams was also a licensed undertaker.

    Died:
Burial Feb 8, 1951 in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, MN.

Hemmingford. All church records for the family, are at the Archives

    Making Canadian Roots

Hemmingford, Huntingdon County, Quebec is a small eastern
township village. Originally settled by American Loyalists after the
American Revolution in 1792. In time, a number of non-Loyalist
Americans settled into the Roxham and Hemmingford area, in search for
better land. Apple growing became one of the main crops in the area,
which continues up until today. Our line by Charles Madison Freeman
was a non-Loyalist in seach for a better living conditions, nearby
his father's land just 2 miles away, across the American/Canadian
    border.

    Charles Madison and Elizabeth Freeman:

Charles Madison Freeman was born about 1815 in Mooers, Clinton
    County, New York, U.S.A..

On the 1850 census for Hemmingford, Huntingdon County, Quebec,
Charles was listed of Irish origins (sic.), living on lot #1, Con.
#1, living in a 1 story log cabin on 1 acre of land. The family were
    E. Anglican.

During the 1830's, Hemmingford area Anglicans were given
services by Rev. William Dawes, a travelling minister, who
conducted services in homes of the settlers. This minister's records
are at the Archives in Montreal, Quebec.

Sometime between 1857 and 1861, Charles and his family left the
Anglican church and joined the Wesley Methodist Church of
Hemmingford. This church was built in 1834 on the site of the present
day St. Andrew United Church, of Hemmingford. Methodism was a faith
of converstion and perhaps this applies to Charles and his family.

During the period of 1834 to 1871 Charles Freeman's occupation
was listed on the baptisms of his children as a farmer. On the 1851,
1861, 1871 census, he was listed as a labourer.

Charles married STARR Elizabeth about 1833. Elizabeth (daughter of STARR Thomas and (Starr) Sarah) was born about 1807 in Northern Ireland; died on 31 May 1880 in Hemmingford Co., Quebec, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  STARR Elizabeth was born about 1807 in Northern Ireland (daughter of STARR Thomas and (Starr) Sarah); died on 31 May 1880 in Hemmingford Co., Quebec, Canada.

    Notes:

From the Methodist Church Records, Hemmingford, Quebec:

"Elizabeth (Eliza Starr) Freeman, wife of Charles Madison
Freeman, of Hemmingford, Quebec, a native of Ireland, died at
hemmingford on 31 May 1880, 73 years old, and was interned on 02
June 1880 in the County of Hemmingford, Quebec by S.J.Huges. The
witnesses were Asa Freeman and Mrs. Brown."

Elizabeth (Starr) Freeman's gravestone is still standing today,
surounded by a number of unmarked graves. I haven't found a death of
    Charles Madison Freeman.

Charles and Elizabeth had 10 children, all born in Hemmingford,

    Notes:

    Possibly born in Waterford

I have no other info on James Sr. and Catherine but believe they came
as part of the Peter Robinson settlers who were sponsored by the
British government. There were two groups that came to Canada,
originally to the area near Peterborough, Ontario. One group came in
1823 as part of the Peter Robinson immigrants and I believe James
Brown Sr. was one of them. He ended up in Tingwick, Arthabaska, QC.
The second group came in 1825 and I believe Catherine Buckley was
part of that group. I have no proof of this but do have the passenger
lists and there were a James and a Catherine that would have been of
the right age to have been married in1834.
    Bill Grimes

    Birth:
    BET ABT 1803 AND 1810

James married BUCKLEY Catherine about 1831 in St. Patice de Tingwick, Quebec, Canada. Catherine (daughter of BUCKLEY Jacques (James) and MCMAHON Mary) was born in 1812 in County Cork?, Ireland; died on 28 Oct 1837 in St. Michell de Sherbrooke, QC Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  BUCKLEY Catherine was born in 1812 in County Cork?, Ireland (daughter of BUCKLEY Jacques (James) and MCMAHON Mary); died on 28 Oct 1837 in St. Michell de Sherbrooke, QC Canada.

    Notes:

Catherine was part of the 1825 Peter Robinson immigrants.

    Children:
    1. BROWN Ellen was born in 1831 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada; died in 1894 in Old St. Patrick's Cemetery, Birch Cooley, Renville Co., MN.
    2. BROWN Mary was born in 1833; died in 1895.
    3. 6. (Jr) James Brown was born on 03 May 1835 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada; died on 02 Oct 1881 in Norfolk Twp, Renville Co., MN.

  7. 14.  GOGGIN Edmund was born in 1808 in Skull Parish, County Cork, Ireland (son of GOGGIN David); died in 1898 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada.

    Notes:

In Ireland, the year 1810 was not in itself unusual. Things were
neither good nor bad. People went about their work as usual. There
were marriages, births and deaths. Some of the more hardy and
adventerous souls, migrated to America, to them the 'Land of Plenty'.
But to the members of the Brown family, this was, indeed, a most
important year, because it was then that a son was born to the Goggin
Family of County Cork. His name was Edwin, or as he was sometimes
called, Ned, and he is the most remote ancestor about whom we have
any knowledge. About his early life we know nothing. We do know that
he married a lass named Mary Hudnut (also spelled Hodnett) in the
city of Cork. Not long after their marriage, the great potato famine
struck Ireland, and Edwin, his wife Mary and possibly his first
child, David, left Ireland by sailing vessel for America.
Mary's brother, Richard Hudnut, sailed for America at the same time,
but in another vessel. As sailing vessels had to depend on the wind,
they always made for the nearest port. Mary's ship was blown into the
mouth of the St. Laurence River, while that of her brother came into
the harbor at New York. According to our informant, Angela Borne,
Richard became a successful businessman in New York and was probably
the founder of the famous cosmetic company that bears his name. The
only other information concerning this branch of the family, is that
he had an adopted daughter, Virginia, who was one of the many wives
of Rudolph Valentino, movie actor of the 1920's.
Meanwhile, Mary and Edwin settled on a farm in or about Tinwich,
Arthabasha County in the province of Quebec. There, more children
were born, at least five that we have record of, but there may have
been more. In addition to David, who was born in Ireland, there was
Ned, Katie, Anna, Mary Anne, and Joanna. In the year 1890 at the age
of 60, Edwin's wife, Mary died. Her husband followed her soon after
at the age of 80. Both were probably buried in the old church yard
near Tinwich. Edwin, in his later years, became senile, and his only
activity was saying the rosary. A few days before he died, he plucked
off each bead of the rosary while saying it and dropped them on the
floor. He never asked for his rosary again.
While it seems safe to assume that most of Edwin and Mary's children
married, we have records on only two of them. Katie was married to a
man by the name of Mullens, and they had two children, Katie and
Mary. Beyond this we have no information. Mary Anne married James
Brown, and it is with these progenitors that we are concerned in this
family tree. James, Mary Anne's husband, was also born in Canada.
While living in Canada, three children were born to them; James, Mary
Ann and Edmund. When James was six, Mary Ann three and her brother
Edmund, one, the family left Canada. It was in the year, 1868 that
they arrived in St. Peter, Minnesota, From there they journeyed by ox
team to Norfolk Township near Birch Cooley. There James took up
farming, and there the following children were born; David,
Katherine, Ellen, Edward, Patrick and Sarah.

Written by Thomas J. Shay February, 1963

Edmund married HODNETT Mary Ann about 1836 in Schull, County Cork, Ireland. Mary was born in 1817 in Schull, Cork, Ireland; died in 1890 in Tingwick, Arthabasha County, Quebec, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

married, we have records on only two of them.
