6208 | Source James Carten The Jesuit Journal tells us that on the 10-06-1653 the Onieda tribe of the Iroquois attacked Cap Rouge. They took three captives, a young man Hugues le Cousturier, Pierre Gareman and his ten year old son, Charles. Captive children were raised as members of the tribe. This is what they did with Charles Gareman. Charles married an Onieda woman named Marie Gonnentenne and was living in an Onieda village, upstream from Quebec in 1677. That year he took his daughter Louise to Quebec for baptism. He left her with the Ursuline nuns. Louise died there in 1683. Nothing more is known of Charles Gareman. In the Histoire De Notre-Dame de Ste. Foy, the priest H.-A. Scott writes (pp. 295-296): "the 10-06-1653, ... Pierre Gareman, called the Picard, had a consequence even more sad, as he was taken alive with his son Charles, of eight years, ... Charles owes his life to his young age and was later released." Effectively, in the autumn of 1655, the Jesuits bought him from the Onneyouts. In 1676, Charles will wed Marie Gonnentenne, of which the daughter Louise, god-daughter of Frontenac, will die at the Ursulines in 1683. Read at her funeral by her grandson Brian Freeman: To me Grandma was my second mother. She taught me about life, politics, manners, people, writing, golf, society, you name it. She helped me with school projects and personal issues. She kept me company when I was feeling down or lonely. When I was a child she was not only my Grandmother, she was usually me best friend. That friendship continued until last week. Many things that I did in my life, I did to the motivation of hearing her tell me how proud she was of me. We found that the two of us could talk on a level that we often couldn't do with others. Although Grandma had the ability to ruffle the feathers of other on certain issues, we found a way to get beyond that and "solve the world's problems," as she would say. My memories with her goes well beyond holiday visits. I spent uncountable hours at her house just visiting or helping out with projects. Most of my memories lies within her house and yard as we touched on all of the topics of the day. I am happy about every moment I've spent with her even the occasional disagreements which I think we both learned from. My last memory of her today will be remembering all of the other good times we've had. Memories from Ruth Maimie Ekstrom Memories – Karen you asked for these. I warned you there would be times they would be hardly legible but you said go ahead. I remember my grandmother Ekstrom sitting in the “corner” of the kitchen. With the wood stove on one side and a table with many canaryies (sp) birds on a table beside her. She had what I would call a many layered cage and quite a few birds. She would sit and whittle and talk to them and they would respond. I was intrigued. They only responded to her voice. Not mine or any one else. My grandfather was a gentle sort of remote figure. But although he may not have responded to the to her grand children, he did respond to me. My first remembrance of my grand parents home was warmth and Love. Lots of it. They lived next door – one house removed. Their house sm. house our house All on one whole lot In back – behind grandfathers house was the horse barn. Behind our house was the cow barn and chickens. Horses and cows were never kept in the same barn. Horses and chickens were separate but in the same building. The horses were for draying (hauling) your [supplies]. (1) Remember Grandmother Ekstrom Life – Birds – Arvid – Death (2) The days of haying – The houses The sand paint for water The fun of controlling the placing of the hay on the stack by the speed etc of the stacker team. First driving – Model T across hay (practice) land. (3) My father took me everywhere possible with him. His campaigne (sic) for sheriff. His trip to Mr. (Fostor) to look after my mothers parents farm problems. Mr. Weker (Lawyer) and friend traveled with us (by train). I was about four years old. I was left with an older couple called Mr. & Mrs. Hanson while dad & Mr. Weker went out to the farm. This is still embarrassing to tell: Noone told me where the bathroom was and I was too embarrassed to ask these people I had just met and was left with. I suffered as long as I could and then went into some woods near by and relieved myself. What ever happened after that I cannot recall tho (sic) I have really tried. The Hansons spoke very little English and what they said to friends and my father was in Norwegian and I could not understand. Some how I was told where the “out house” was and I was scared to death of it (because all it had was two large holes and is was high). I was sure I would fall in. But I must have been very timid because I never told anyone my feelings about “anything”. My father was my “rock.” He always was kind of gentle and protective. My earliest memory is being picked up by him from a couch at my grandma and grandpa Ekstroms house on a Christmas eve (we always spent Christmas eve at this house, Thanksgiving at Aunt Anna and uncle Ervin Cook’s farm house, Christmas day at ours), but I digress. I had fallen asleep and when it was time to go home my father picked me up. Someone said “look she’s smiling” and daddy said, “She always wakes up smiling.” Funny how children are impressed with praise and I think it was because my father had pride in me that it meant so much. Also, I do not recall my mother “ever” praising me. Maybe she did but somehow she took care of my needs (physical) very well, I am sure. I was kept clean and healthy. As my father once said “she was a good woman.” I was born approx nine mos. After my sister Edna died (at about 1 1/2 or 2) I was the third girl. I somehow (later) sort of got the feeling I was a “gender” disappointment to my mother. This is a sort of (paradox). My father, being the only son of an only son of an only son – etc. of the Ekstrom name and line. My father wanted a son to carry on the family name (a proud name) and so there would be more pregnancies until a son was born. Some how I got the feeling that sex for my mother was for procreation only – not a pleasurable act. ie: That’s why I got the impression from her. But my father never felt that way. He really hurt a great deal when Edna died (he loved children) and I probably helped fill an empty place in his heart. I was what one might say “a daddy’s girl.” I was a blue eyed blonde happy baby and I enjoyed a very happy young life. At pre-school age (maybe 4) I was chosen to be the bride in a presentation at school called “Tom Thumbs Wedding.” My groom was Ormiston Kermott, the dentist son. If you do no know, Tom Thumb was a famous midget in the circus world. (There are pictures of us among my photos). Ormiston (what a name) died while attending the U. He had a blister on his heel. It led to blood poisoning and killed him. (Remember b/4 penicillin and also remember young people feel they are invincible and are careless of their health.) My next years of “Lime-light” are my years of competing in what was called declamation contests. I really did quite well. Memorized and had training from Mrs. on presenting my reading. I won awards including a gold medal. I am enclosing and the prize I gave. I remember the warm, clean smell of the cow barn in the winter time, when the cows were brought in from the pasture and lived near us (in the same block). |-------------------|-------------------------| | House barns | Sow barns | | Chickens | Silo & feed area | |-------------------|-------------------------| Our house | Grandfather’s | sm | our house | Block of space | house | house | milk house | | | our old | indoor | | | one | plumbing | |-------------------|----------|---------------| There were always (barn) cats. They were sort of wild, except for one, and lived warm & snug among the cows, had their litters hidden away in the haymow (but I found them and loved them,) and they kept the mice down and received warm, fresh cows milk morning and night. My father was meticulous (very clean) about the hired hands who helped with the milking, that they washed the cow teats (tits to you) and their hands before milking. My parents were Scandinavian and very clean people. Only now do I realize how natural this was for them. Today it would be controlled or demanded by someone. To them it was simply the way one did things. My father was a self taught vet. He vaccinated, treated many animals beside his own. If I say self-taught, I may be wrong. His family was very intelligent and had formal education beyond the usual (norm.) His father, Grandpa Ekstrom came from a wealthy family in Sweden. He ran away as a young lad (what age is uncertain – at least in his terms) and hid on board a ship was accepted as a cabin boy. His family tried to have him returned to them but was not successful. He stayed at sea and worked his way up to Captain of his own sailing vessell (sp) ship. There is a time lapse I cannot account for. Maybe cousin Roy Cook in Seattle may help you. He has a genealogy of the Ekstrom family. His wife’s name is Sophia. However, my father was very intelligent and adaptable to his enprisonment. Grandfather Ekstrom at one time when he was married and had a family of 3 girls and 1 boy (my father) an other male child Verner, had died in infancy. He was a banker in, I think, Litchfield, MN. At that time banks were personal businesses. He and two other partners owned the bank thru economics, poor loans, extended credit or whatever, the bank failed. The two partners pulled everything they could out of it but my grandfather felt an obligation to his depositors and put everything on the “block” except his furniture and personal possessions. My father, who had homesteaded in North Dakota brought them, his parents and three sisters to Dakota (Towner) and built them a house. His mother grandma Ekstrom and her daughters became seamstresses. They had always done fine “needle work” and they now put it to use. They hand made every fine linen you could imagine. Cloths, wedding gowns, table linens, trousseau (sp) linens, baby Christmas gowns, table linens, napkins. This was not simple embroidering, but “cut” work or “open” work, where a solid satin (I think) stitch was done over & over. I was too young to appreciate what they were doing and what my cousins, particularly, Hattie Cook, was forever doing. They were never without hand-work in their hands. My grandfather became a “dray man”. He with his team of horses and dray wagon on the wheels in summer & sleigh in winter hauled freight from the Depot to the merchants of the town. He accepted what was handed him and gained the love and respect of the town businessmen. He was “Dad” to them and they gave him a gold watch on his retirement with the inscription “To Dad from the Boys”. He was a great wonderful person. My own relationship with him was a warm, safe, place. Because of his loss of hearing and bad eye sight (he had a cataract operation before anesthesia was invented) they gave him whiskey & tied him down, he only had it done once – could not face it again. He loved to read but had to use a large strong magnifying glass. He took & read a daily paper and had in the past accumulated a bit of a library. Special Occasions: (a) Death of Grandma Ekstrom – laid out in parlor of their house. Took Carol (neighbor) Chadderton to see her. First death I had experienced. (b) Presentation of bouquet of roses to Crown Prince & Princess of Sweden – on rear platform of train. Betty Sommerdorf represented the Germans (her father owned the general merchentile store) and I represented the Swedes. We both wore link (satin? rayon? shiny material) like dresses with panties to match. About 4 yrs old I think – or less. The bouquet was as large as I was and my father held me up to present them. The picture that was taken shows me standing on a chair holding dahlias from mothers garden. We each (Betty & I) received a gold bracelet. I am wearing it in the picture. I just recently got I back from Aileen after I pointed out it was mine in the above mentioned picture. The inscription on the inside had been scratched out. (c) Tom Thumbs wedding – Ormiston Kermott (dentists son). (d) Declamation contests Mrs. Kinder, wife of school principal coached me. Still have one gold medal. (e) Played 1st trumpet in band. Was suppose to play solo “Little Town of Bethlehem” at church xmas program. Totally “froze” – couldn’t play a note! Mother was embarrassed & angry. Daddy felt so very sorry for me and comforted me. (f) My first dog. The butchers wife gave me a Pekinese puppy. Her purebred female was unfortunately mated to a undesirable male. I was thrilled and loved her (my puppy) dearly. But one day when I came home from school for lunch I could hear crying in the basement and the door was locked. Mother wouldn’t let me go to her. She said the dog was sick but she was taking care of it. When I came home after school she said it had died and she had buried it. I found out she had cloraphormed (sp) it and her puppies. I didn’t even know she was pregnant. When I told her I knew she had killed them she didn’t deny it and was furious at the neighbor who had told me. I was crushed. These are real names. I am trying to be completely honest with you. I don’t think many parents do. It is different to separate ones feelings. The small form stopped struggling and became still. Like a sigh, Edna ceased her struggle for air and relaxed. It was over. Mrs. Shipman, the nurse, turned to John and shook her head. He buried his head in his hands and sobbed. He cradled the baby and rocked her. Talking to her and soothing her as if she was still with them. She in now in God’s hands. No she is still in mine. The blond, blue eyed baby lay limp but still warm to the touch. He could not put her down. At 2 1/2 she could walk and her dearest treasure was “a new pair of shoes”. She had hugged them to her and repeated over & over “new shoes, my new shoes!” They took her from him gently and his sister (Mamie) put her arm around him and lead [sic] him off. The mother & nurse bathed and dressed the baby and prepared her for burial. In those days there was not a funeral parlor and embalming was not done. The family took care of it’s own. John came in and put the “new shoes” in her arms. She was buried from the home. John was inconsolable. His sisters rallied around him and gave what support they could. A judge, Judge Christianson, a friend of John’s knew of Nettie’s love of flowers particularly dahlias and as a new strain of light pink had just been developed he gave it the name “Edna Karin” in memory of (my sister) the baby. Approx 2 1/2 yrs later another blond, blue eyed baby was born to John & Nettie. Atho [sic] she could not replace Edna, she did fill a loving need. She was a happy cheerful child and her father adored her. He took her everywhere possible with him. However there was an older child. Born 2 yrs before Edna. She was a somber quick baby and when the tragedy of Edna’s illness (pneumonia) and death overwhelmed her parents I’m sure she felt a bit left out. Then the new baby. All smiles and watched over very carefully so nothing happened to her. This new baby seemed to live a charmed life. She was blond, blue eyed, chubby and a totally happy smiling person. John was enchanted by her and his family, who lived next door were thrilled to see him so happy again. And the bond between father & daughter grew every day. John was well liked & respected in the community. He was kind and gentle and giving he also had great manners. He was hansom, and people responded to him. He was without guile and was trustworthy. His ward could always be depended upon. He was brought up a “gentleman” but never let necessary hard labor demean him. His manners were impeccable. It was inate (sp). (totally natural) My father (John) led a very diversified life. He was an only son after his brother Verner died in infancy, and being an only son meant a great deal to the Ekstrom family. There had been only one male to carry the name for several generations. And today there is only one – John Verner (my brothers grand son) to carry it on (and possess the “Loving Cup”) a family heirloom handed down to only sons for at least 6 generations. Vestibule of Train I have a desire to let you all know who I am and have been. I don’t think it is an ego trip. I do feel there isn’t enough time or availability to tell you all I would like you to know and I am overwhelmed with trying to give you an unbiased picture. But I know it is almost impossible to be objective. And I have no way of knowing how you will interpret what I tell you. Boy I wish I could. | EKSTROM Ruth Mamie (I2645)

6250 | Stephen Hopkins was born in England about 1580. He died in Plymouth between 6 June and 17 July 1644. His parentage has not been proved, but he may be the son of Stephen Hopkins of Wortley, Parish of Wotten Underedge, County of Gloucester, England and perhaps baptized there on 29 Oct. 1581. The Wortley historian has conjectured, after a thorough study of the family, that Stephen of the Mayflower may well have been the son of Stephen Hopkins, a clothier of Wortley who also had a son, Robert Hopkins of London. He sailed in the Mayflower to New England in 1620, as one of the "Londoners" or "strangers" recruited for the voyage with his wife, Elizabeth and children and two men servants, Edward Doty and Edward Lister. Upon the ship's arrival at Cape Cod 11 November, 1620, Stephen was among the men signing the Mayflower Compact in the ship's cabin. He was one of three men disignated to provide counsel and advice to Captain Myles Standish on the first land expedition of the Pilgrims in the New World. During the third day out, the company chanced upon an Indian deer trap and Stephen was able to explain it's funciton and danger to his fellows. In February of 1620/21, when Indians appeared on a neighboring hilltop, Captain Standish took Stephen Hopkins with him to negotiate with the "savages." Thereafter, Stephen was invariable deputized to meet the Indians and act as envoy to friendly Chief Massasoit, and he made a friend for the colonists of Samoset, another Indian whom Stephen entertained in his home. Despite the mortality caused by tribulations of the first Pilgrim winter in New England, Stephen Hopkins' household of eight persons was one of only four households that escaped loss. Stephen was referred to as a merchant and a planter in Plymouth records and also "Master." Only two others of the 17 free men on the oyage were so styled. He was also called "Gentleman". He received a six-acre lot in the division of land in 1623 and later had other plots by grant or purchase. It is stated that he kept for his home throughout his life at Plymouth the lot on the easterly corner of Main and Leyden Streets that had been assigned to him on arrival. He built and owned the first wharf in Plymouth Colony of which there is record, selling it for sixty pounds in July of 1637. He built a home in Yarmouth on Cape Cod but returned to Plymouth and gave the Yarmouth dwelling to his son Giles, who remained there. Stephen Hopkins was made a freeman by 1633 and served with sons, Giles and Caleb and son-in-law, Jacob Cooke as "Voluntary" in the Pequot War of 1637. He held the position of Assisant in the Colony from at least 1633 to 1636. Probably from his status in the Colony as a "stranger," Setphen found himself on occasion in official difficulty. In June of 1636, while serving as Assistant, he was fined for battery of John Tisdale. In 1637 and 1638 he was charged with various indiscretions involving the sale of intoxicants and other items at his dwelling. In 1638/39 he was found in contempt of court for refusing to deal fairly with Dorothy Temple, an apprentice girl, and in December of 1639, he was charged with selling a looking glass at an excessive price. Stephen was probably the young man of that name who served as minister's clerk on the vessel "Sea Venture" which sailed from London 2 June 1609, bound for Virginia. The ship was severely damaged in a hurricane, and the company was washed ashore on the Mermudan "Ile of Divels" on 28 July. The 150 survivors were marooned on the island for nine months, building two vessels which ultimately took them to Virginia. During the sojourn, Stephen Hopkins encouraged an uprising by his fellows upon grounds that the Governor's authority pertained only to the existence in Bermuda. For his remarks he was placed under guard, brought before the company in manacles and sentenced to death by court martial. "But so penitent hee was and made so much moane, alleadging the ruine of his wife and children in this his trespasse," according to William Strachey's record of the voyage, that friends among his cohorts procured a pardon from the Governor. The two newly buildt vessels, the "Patience" and the "Deliverance," arrived at Jamestown on 24 May 1610, but no evidence has been found of Hopkins' residence there, and it is presumed he soon returned to his family in England. Strachey noted that while Hopkins was very religious, he was contentious and defiant of authority and possessed enough learning to undertake to wrest leadership from others. The home in England of Stephen Hopkins was just outside of London Wall on the high road entering the city at Aldgate in the vicinity of Heneage House. In this neighborhood lived John Carver and William Bradford of the Mayflower company; Robert Cushman, the London agent for the Pilgrims; and Edward Southworth, who later came to New England. Stephen was called a tanner or leathermaker at the time of the Mayflower voyage. His first wife and mother of Constance and Giles and perhaps John is unknown. She died before 1617/18. No authority has been found for the oft published identification of her as Constance Dudley. His second marriage to Elizabeth Fisher was performed at St. Mary Matfellon, Whitechapel, London, England on 19 February 1617/18. (1618) She died in Plymouth after 4 February 1638/39. Their first child, Demaris came on the Mayflower with Constance and Giles and was alive in 1627 but was probably the daughter reported by Bradford the have "dyed here." Their second child, a son, Oeanus, so named because he was born aboard the Mayflower on the Atlantic Ocean between 16 September and 11 November 1620. The will of Stephen Hopkins, dated 6 June 1644, was proved upon testimony of Wlliam Bradford and Myles Standish at a General Court at Plymouth on 20 August 1644. Calling himself of Plymouth in New England and "weake yet in good and prfect memory," he directed that his body be "buryed as neare as convenyently may be to my wyfe, Deceased." He made these bequests; To son Giles Hopkins the great bull now in the hands of Mris. Warren. To Steven Hopkins "my sonn Giles his sonne," 20 shillings in Mris. Warren's hands for the hire of said bull. To Dau. Constanc Snow, wife of Nicholas, "my mare." To Dau. Deborah Hopkins "the brodhorned black cowe and her calf and half the Cowe called Motley. To Dau. Damaris Hopkins "the Cowe called Damaris heiffer and the white faced calf and half the cowe called Motley." Biographical Summary Stephen Hopkins was from Hampshire, England. He married his first wife, Mary, and in the parish of Hursley, Hampshire; he and wife Mary had their children Elizabeth, Constance, and Giles all baptized there. It has long been claimed that the Hopkins family was from Wortley, Gloucester, but this was disproven in 1998. For more information on the true English origins of Stephen Hopkins, see the "Published Research" section at the bottom of this page. Stephen Hopkins went with the ship Sea Venture on a voyage to Jamestown, Virginia in 1609 as a minister's clerk, but the ship wrecked in the "Isle of Devils" in the Bermudas. Stranded on an island for ten months, the passengers and crew survived on turtles, birds, and wild pigs. Six months into the castaway, Stephen Hopkins and several others organized a mutiny against the current governor. The mutiny was discovered and Stephen was sentenced to death. However, he pleaded with sorrow and tears. "So penitent he was, and made so much moan, alleging the ruin of his wife and children in this his trespass, as it wrought in the hearts of all the better sorts of the company". He managed to get his sentence commuted. Eventually the castaways built a small ship and sailed themselves to Jamestown. How long Stephen remained in Jamestown is not known. However, while he was gone, his wife Mary died. She was buried in Hursley on 9 May 1613, and left behind a probate estate which mentions her children Elizabeth, Constance and Giles. Stephen was back in England by 1617, when he married Elizabeth Fisher, but apparently had every intention of bringing his family back to Virginia. Their first child, Damaris, was born about 1618. In 1620, Stephen Hopkins brought his wife, and children Constance, Giles, and Damaris on the Mayflower (child Elizabeth apparently had died). Stephen was a fairly active member of the Pilgrims shortly after arrival, perhaps a result of his being one of the few individuals who had been to Virginia previously. He was a part of all the early exploring missions, and was used almost as an "expert" on Native Americans for the first few contacts. While out exploring, Stephen recognized and identified an Indian deer trap. And when Samoset walked into Plymouth and welcomed the English, he was housed in Stephen Hopkins' house for the night. Stephen was also sent on several of the ambassadorial missions to meet with the various Indian groups in the region. Stephen was an assistant to the governor through 1636, and volunteered for the Pequot War of 1637 but was never called to serve. By the late 1630s, however, Stephen began to occasionally run afoul of the Plymouth authorities, as he apparently opened up a shop and served alcohol. In 1636 he got into a fight with John Tisdale and seriously wounded him. In 1637, he was fined for allowing drinking and shuffleboard playing on Sunday. Early the next year he was fined for allowing people to drink excessively in his house: guest William Reynolds was fined, but the others were acquitted. In 1638 he was twice fined for selling beer at twice the actual value, and in 1639 he was fined for selling a looking glass for twice what it would cost if bought in the Bay Colony. Also in 1638, Stephen Hopkins' maidservant got pregnant from Arthur Peach, who was subsequently executed for murdering an Indian. The Plymouth Court ruled he was financially responsible for her and her child for the next two years (the amount remaining on her term of service). Stephen, in contempt of court, threw Dorothy out of his household and refused to provide for her, so the court committed him to custody. John Holmes stepped in and purchased Dorothy's remaining two years of service from him: agreeing to support her and child. Stephen died in 1644, and made out a will, asking to be buried near his wife, and naming his surviving children. To Dau. Ruth "the Cowe called Red Cole and her calfe and a Bull at yarmouth wch is an yeare and advantage old and half the curld Cowe." To Dau. Elizabeth "the Cowe called Smykins and her calf and thother half of the Curld Cowe wth Ruth and an yearelinge heiffer wthout a tayle in the keepeing of Gyles Hopkins at Yarmouth." To four daus. Deborah, Demaris, Ruth and Elizabeth Hopkins, all the moveable goods that belonged to his house, "and in case any of my said daughters should be taken away by death before they marryed then...their division to be equally devided amongst the Survivors." To son Caleb, "heire apparent," house and lands at Plymouth, one pair of oxen and the hire of them, then in the hands of Richard Church, and "all my debts which are now oweing unto me." The testator reserved to his daus. "free recourse to my house in Plymouth upon any occation there to abide and remayne for such tyme as any of them shall thinke meete and convenyent & they single persons." He named son, Caleb as executor, and Caleb and Captain Standish as joint supervisors of the will. The inventory of his goods, taken by Captain Standish, Thomas Willet and John Doane on 17 July 1644, listed livestock (fifteen neat cattle, a horse and other stock), household goods, clothing, tools and more than seventeen pounds owed to Hopkins by debtors. The estate was given a total value of about 130 pounds. The division of his moveble estate to daughters Deborah, Damaris, Ruth and Elizabeth was made by son Caleb and Captain Standish on 30 november 1644. In his list of the Mayflower passengers, Governor Bradford included: "Mr. Steven Hopkins, and Elizabeth, his wife, and 2 children, caled Giles, and Constanta, a doughter, both by a former wife; and 2 more by his wife caled Damaris and Oceanus; the last was borne at sea; and two servants, called Edward Doty and Edward Litster." Taking note of changes after 30 years, Bradford wrote of the Hopkins family in the spring of 1651: "Mr. Hopkins and his wife are now both dead, but they lived above 20 years in this place, and had one sone and 4 doughters borne here. Ther sone became a seaman, and dyed at Barbadoes; one daughter dyed here, and 2 are maried, one of them hath 2 children; and one is yet to mary. So their increase which still survive are 5. But his sone Giles is maried and hath 4 children. His doughter Constanta is also maried and hath 12 children, all of them living, and one of them maried." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As published in the American Genealogist which corrects some of the above .... Stephen Hopkins was not from Wortley, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, as has been previously published in numerous books and articles, and the claim he married a woman named Constance Dudley is complete fiction. This alleged origin was disproven in my article, "The True English Origins of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower", published in The American Genealogist 73:161-171. The Wotton-under-Edge claim was never factually sound to begin with, based simply on a few name coincidences and wild speculations. The baptism records of Stephen Hopkins' children Giles and Constance, as well as an additional child Elizabeth, were discovered in the parish registers of Hursley, Hampshire, England. Below is a scan of the Hursley parish register for 1606 showing Constance Hopkins' baptism in the original records. For those of you who can't read the handwriting, it says: "undecimo de May, Constancia filia Steph. Hopkins fuit baptizata", which translates into English as "Eleventh day of May, Constance daughter of Steph. Hopkins was baptized." And there in Hursley, on 9 May 1613, Mary Hopkins the wife of Stephen was buried. Mary's children Giles, Constance, and Elizabeth are all named in her probate estate papers dated 10 May 1613 and on file at the Hampshire Records Office (file: 1613AD/046). The claim Stephen had a son William is based on Wotton-under-Edge records, and is invalid since that Hopkins family had no connection with the Mayflower. The claim that Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower had a son Stephen baptized at St. Stephen Coleman Street, London on 22 December 1609 is also wrong--no such baptism record exists. This baptism is apparently an error for a real baptism which is found on 3 December 1609 at the parish of St. Katherine Coleman, London. This child died on 19 February 1609/10, and the father had another child named John Hopkins, baptized on 14 April 1611. Since Stephen Hopkins the Mayflower passenger was in Virginia at the time this child was conceived and later baptized, he could not have fathered it. The name Stephen Hopkins is quite common--there are at least five of them in London during this time period. This is just another man named Stephen Hopkins, and there is no connection with the Mayflower passenger of the same name | Hopkins Stephen (I53736)

The original document seems to have been altered, but hard to tell on photocopy without seeing oringinal document. It appears to have been first written as Edward Bergeron, son of Alexander Bergeron and Agnes Boucher. Then, after the name Bergeron and slightly above and to the right is the name Vallee. Also below the line is added Edmund Vallee and where the word Vallee appears this time is just past the fathers name and almost gives the impression that HE is the Bergeron/Vallee; but I am more inclined to think that it is meant to say that Edward is also known as EDMUND VALLEE. It seems awfully coincidental to me that BOTH Edward Bergeron (Vallee) and our Edmund Vallee were born on the same day and both had mother's named Agnes Boucher. It is through this book I have collected all the names and birthdates. The book is rare. Only 150 copies were made. The one I have, I purchased through an Antiquarian book seller. It also mentions that a "portrait in well executed ivory miniature, done in 1805. The short waisted, double breasted coat in which he appears, with its high rolling collar and brass buttons, the ruffled front and voluminous neckwear, and his dark locks and youthful countenance recall at once the representations of Commodore Perry, perhaps, or most any other of the more familiar personages of his day and years." When Ephraim was a young man, it is said tha he was on the staff of the governor of New Hampshire, and was addressed as Colonel, as the superscriptions of his earlier letters in the book also show. This title, however, soon gave way, in Ohio, to that of "Squire", which, by the custom of farming countries, was still bestowed on the owner of any extensive acreage, and thereafter, he was always thus addressed and referred to. Ephraim also was a soldier in the war of 1812. Mr. Brown's interest in public concerns is plain from the correspondence; as to these, he had strong convictions, reached always by his own demonstable thought. The evidence at hand mostly relates to national parties and politics. He early committed himself against the tyranny and injustice of secret organizations, and after the Morgan episode, from a Mason himself, he became a pronounced anit-Mason. He was long aligned with the party of Henry Clay, and in sympathy with its country-wide plans. In 1825, he went to the Ohio legislature, and again, in 1832, when, as he writes, Mr. Whittlesey was chosen for Congress by a majority of a thousand, and he himself was elected, as an anti-Jackson, or, as such were soon to be designated, a Whig senator from the district. He was very much against human slavery. "Not even the least plausible excuse can be offered in favor of Slavery. I challenge it from any person whatever. By the peculiarity of their constitution, it seeems as tho' the God of Nature designed that portion of the Globe included in the torrid zone for the people of color. Perhaps, you will laugh at my Yankee principles, but, I who am willing to put up contented with what can be got from honest industry, shall never be laughed out of them. I have been taught from my cradle to dispise Slavery and will never forget to teach my children, if any I should ever have, the same lesson, for 'Tis Heaven's high gift, 'tis Nature's great gift That none be Slave whom God himself made free. Squire Brown's activities in the Underground Railroad were well understood at the time, and long afterwards, incidents about them were published in the local histories and newspapers, and even in metropolitan journals. Ephraim was nearly seventy years old when he died in Bloomfield on April 17, 1845. Brownwood cemetery where he is buried is the land he donated to the township trustees...a total of 4.47 acres to be used for that purpose and is named after his family. Sweet Child Voice in the Wild Mr. Ephraim Brown, of North Bloomfield, one of the early wealthy men, came one season, left men there to build his house, while he went back for the winter. There were no women in that neighborhood. One Sunday morning in June of the following year as his men, with some neighbors, were sitting in the sun in the opening about the house, they heard a sound. They all listened. They recognized a baby's cry. One of the men said afterwards, "That was the sweetest sound I ever heard in my life." Of course, he did not mean that the distressed baby's voice was so pleasant, but he knew that where a baby was, a mother was, and where a mother was a real home would be.Great traveling preparations were made by the emigrants. One woman in Connecticut baked her oven several times full of bread, dried it, rolled it, and packed it in sacks that it might serve for food on the journey.Upon arrival, families sometimes slept in the ox-cart, but more often slept under bark roofs, keeping their clothing and provisions near by in hollow trees. One of the first things these pioneers did, if they came in the early spring, was to clear a little patch and start a garden. Men struggled for a chance to make garden then as boys and men struggle now not to make them. Almost all of them brought seeds, and so carefully did they have to plan not to have heavy baggage, nor to be burdened with small bundles, that apple seeds were sometimes brought in the hollow cane which they used as a staff. The second act was preparing logs for the house. Some of these buildings had no chimney, no doors, no windows. It is surprising to find in how many cases this is true.Women cooked meals at the side of chestnut stumps for weeks and months at times. In many cases men were so occupied in other directions that they gave little attention to domestic conveniences of any kind. Record is had of several women who, in despair, made ovens of clay and mud in which to bake their bread. Before that, they had had to stir their bread on a fresh hewn log and wrap it around a stick or a corncob. Their children were set to holding it and watching it as it baked and browned. Children, in those days, were like children in these, and some of them carefully watched the bread, baked it evenly, while others who dropped it in the ashes or burned it were chastised for their carelessness. The result was the same in those days as now; the careless child did not grow any more careful, and the careful child did most of the bread-baking.One of the study foremothers, a Farmington woman, who had a poor fireplace in her dingy cabin, and who loved to prepare good things to eat for her family, became desperate because her husband procrastinated in building an oven for her. She said she had baked bread and done all her cooking in one big iron kettle and she was tired of it. She, therefore, fashioned some bricks of mud, burned them in some way, and constructed an oven which was such a success that people traveling her way stopped to see it.Men and women, by temperament and environment, were the same in that day as this, and some husbands were thrifty, loving, temperate and just, and some were quite the opposite; some women were clinging, tender and childish, while the majority were not. The forefather was really the monarch of the family, and when the food was low it was he who braved the storms and the cold to bring provisions from Pennsylvania; nevertheless, he was neglectful of the smaller things. On many farms even in late days there were no cisterns. All water had to be caught in tubs as it fell from the roof on a flatboard leading into barrels and tubs. These receptacles naturally must stand near the house, and the mosquitoes hatched therein were conveniently near their feeding grounds. Women carried their clothes to the nearby creeks and washed them, laying them on the grass to dry. The well was often far from the house. If there chanced to be a spring, the stable was invariably put nearer to it than the house.Within the recollection of the writer, a farmer who kept five men and whose wife did the work, either thoughtlessly or purposely neglected to keep her supplied with sufficient wood. Several times the housewife threated to get no dinner unless wood was brought to her. This threat was not effective. She knew and the men knew that there was plenty of cold food in the pantry with which to satisfy themselves. One day when the husband came home to dinner with the hired hands he was obliged to step over two rails of his choice fence which were sticking out of the doorway, the other ends being in the stove furnishing fuel for the dinner. As this rail fence was his pride and as rail splitting was hard work, he always thereafter delegated one of his men to keep the wood box full. | Brown Ephraim (I50615)

6295 | The First Baptist Church of Stillwater was started in 1762 near the place where Burgoyne was taken in the American War, a church that became unusually large and prosperous and branched out in many directions; but, on account of certain difficulties, it suffered a great calamity and became nearly extinct. Rev. Lemuel Powers was a minister there. In 1779, two years after the Burgoyne battles, this home church had eighty-six members and eight branches. In 1781, Beriah Kelly commenced preaching for this body, and in July he was ordained at a council regularly called. His labors terminated in 1788 or 1789. Meanwhile, in 1785 or 1786, an unfortunate division occurred. One section worshiped in a frame meeting-house about a mile east of the original congregation, with Lemuel Powers as their minister. The others met in a log meeting-house about a mile west , with Beriahl Kelly pastor. In 1790 a reunion took place under the united pastorate of Rev. Lemuel Powers and Rev. David Irish. This continued until 1793, when the latter retired from the work. In 1800, Lemuel Powers was gathered to his fathers. His remains rest in the private burying-ground near Ezra Mungers, marked on by a common stone; but his record is high. The above was taken from the Saratoga County, New York History, by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, 1878. History of the Villages and Towns of Saratoga County. Stillwater (Part 2) Vll. Churches. His wife, Abigail became the administrator for his will along with his son, Cyrus Powers, being of age at the time of his father's death. | Powers Lemuel (I52426)

6296 | THE FIRST SANTEES IN AMERICA The story of the Santees who established the family in this country will probably never be accurately told. There is a popular tradition that Elias Santee or Sandy/Sendi was of French Huguenot origin; that Elias came to America from Holland in 1690, whither he fled from France, in 1685, at the time of the Revocation of the Decree of Nantes, and settled on a farm nine miles from Easton, PA. and that he was the son of Robert Sandy who fled England to Barbados and later came to America. THE FIRST SANTEES IN AMERICA The story of the Santees who established the family in this country will probably never be accurately told. There is a popular tradition that they were of French Huguenot orgin; that Elias came to America from Holland in 1690, whither he had fled from France, in 1685, at the time of the Revocation of the Decree of Nantes, and settled on a farm nine miles from Easton, Pa. The latter part of the tradition must be certainly erroneous, for the first white settler anywhere in that section of the country came there not earlier than 1725. No account of the Huguenot emigration contains the name or anything that resembles it in the slightest degree. Neither does the name appear in either Rupp's 30,000 Emigrants or Hutton's Emigrants. Rupp gives the name of Gabriel Santer as having come from England and settled in Germantown in 1683, and Hutton gives the name of Robert Sandy as having been banished from England to the Island of Barbadoes in 1685 for complicity in Monmouth's Rebellion, and says that large numbers of these banished Englishmen later came to America. In the old records the name is spelled (when known to refer to members of the family) Sandy, Sandi, Sandie, Sandee, Sendy, Sendee, Sendie, Sendi,Sentie; This variation is probably due to changes in church clerks and possibly to the German blood in the veins of the descendents of John, son of Abraham and grandson of Elias. The first authentic record now obtainable that is known to refer to any member of the family, gives the name Sandy. Possibly the banished Robert was the father of the whole family. The record referred to above is in the church record of the Drylands Church at Hecktown, Pennslyvania, and gives the date of birth of Christopher, son of Christopher Sandy, as May 4, 1765, and that of his christening as Dec. 22,1765. In the same record under date of Sept. 21, 1790, is recorded the date of the birth of John, son of John and Mary Magdalene Sendy. In 1795 John and Ragina, his wife, were sponsors, and in the record it is spelled Santee, which is the first time it appears that way. In 1797 the record of Mary is spelled Sendi; in 1798 it is spelled Sendee; in 1802, Sandy, which is the spelling followed until 1825, when it is again Sendee; again in 1839 it is Sendie. In another church record in 1809 it is Sandi, and the same until 1830, after which it is spelled Sanatee. In the Hecktown cemetery, on the monument of John (551 in the history of the Santee family), it is spelled Sentie. He died in 1840. A careful study of all these records, the county histories of Pennslyvania, reports from correspondents and talks with very old people in various places, leads to the conclusion that the first American Santee located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, early in the eighteenth century; that his name was Elias and that possibly he was the son of Robert Sandy from Barbadoes. From Pennslyvania, Isaac, son of Valentine and brother of Mary Nancy Santee Loghry went to New York state, settling in Cameron, Steuben County. He may have followed the Loghry boys out since they too were from the Wilkes-Barre, PA area. Valentine, the father of Isaac and Mary Santee Loghry went to Luzerne County, Pennslyvania. The first settlement of Easton, called by the Indians "Forks of the Delaware," was in 1739. Northampton County set off from Bucks County in 1752, and Luzerne County established Sept. 26, 1786. In a list of first settlers of Easton who organized a military company under Jacob Arndt, Oct. 13, 1763, are the names of Valentin Sandy and John Painter, 35 men in all. In court records of Luzerne County, Northampton County Clerk's office, May 7, 1807, Abram Landes and wife conveyed to Val. Santee, of Nazareth Twp.,15 acres 94 perches for 89 pounds, 12 schillings, 6 pence. 1 NOTE Military Records, fifth series,in the Pennslyvania Archives, Vol. VIII # 562 gives name of Lieut. Page 79 Santee--The history of the Santee family is somewhat romantic, as following brief sketch, furniched by Dr. Ellis M. Saneee, of Cortland, NY, shows: The story of our ancestor as handed down to me by my grandfather, is as follows: "In 1685,about the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, Elias Santee lived in the Province of Bergundy. He was a French nobleman and a favorite of the King. He had a son named Isaac who was enamored of a German lady named Hahn, who was one of the Queen's maids. Elias was a Huguenot and the King begged him to renounce his religion and conform to the decree. This he refused to do and was impriscned. The Queen informed her maid of what was coming to the family and she and Isaac were quietly married and secretly left the country for Holland, there to await the release of Elias. In 1690 Elias died in prison and Isaac and his young wife came to this country, landing at Philadelphia. Soon afterward he went up the Delaware and settled near where Easton now stands." John Santee, a descendant, was a distinguished officer of the Revolution War. | Santee Elias (I54180)
