I realize the enlistment date and place do not coincide with the enlistment certificate. I have an explanation
for that. He could have enlisted on date specified July 17, 1863, but do to travel, training, etc. would not
have actually reported into his unit until August 30, 1864. At which time the lazy clerk would have just
entered his enlistment and reporting in date the same. For the place were he enlisted, the 4th Infantry
Regiment was originally raised out of Battleboro and the surrounding areas. Hence why the certificate would
state Battleboro. Majority of the volunteers in Company Alpha were formed up from the town of Whitingham
in Whindham County. Hence the company being referred to as the Whitingham Company.
