Notes	Osburh's name and existence as wife of Æthelwulf is known only from Asser's Life of King Alfred. Asser said that she was daughter of Oslac (also not known from any other source), butler of Æthelwulf, and that her father was of Gothic ancestry, and was descended from Stuf and Wihtgar, two brothers who were Jutes and were entrusted with the Isle of Wight by their uncle King Cerdic.[1] She is normally regarded as the mother of Æthelwulf's children:[2] Athelstan Æthelbald Æthelberht Æthelred Alfred the Great Æthelswith Asser portrayed Osburh as "an extremely devout woman, noble in mind, noble also by descent."[1] Osburh presumably died by 856, when Æthelwulf married Judith of the Franks.[2] Sources ↑ 1.0 1.1 Asser.
