    Notes
    • Prince Csaba is the legendary leader of the Székely people. We have no reliable information about his life, which is shrouded in legends and myths. According to some theories, he was not a single person, but rather a composite of at least three individuals who lived at different times. One legend has it that he led a tribe of 3,000 people from the Balkans to Hungary.

The origins of the Székely and Hungarian peoples are closely linked to Prince Csaba.

Csaba appeared in Gesta Hungarorum, written by Anonymus around 1200. According to the "three persons" theory, the legendary figure of Prince Csaba was created from the amalgamation of three real people.

Irnik, the youngest son of Attila, King of the Huns (5th century). After Attila's death (453), he fled to the eastern edge of the Hun Empire (Levedia, Etelköz). Irnik (Irnák) reorganised the Huns living near the Black Sea. This became the basis of the later Onogur (Pre-Bulgarian) Empire.
Kuber, son of Kovrat, Khan of the Onogurs (7th century). In 665, the attacking Khazars destroyed the Onogur Empire, which had been founded by Irnik. Kovrat was a descendant of Irnik. The Onogur people then split into four parts, led by the four sons of Khan Kovrat. The youngest son, Kuber, and his people moved to the allied Avar Empire in the Carpathian Basin in 677. Kuber later took part in the uprising of one of the Avar pretenders to the throne, which forced him to flee. Since his mother was a Byzantine princess, he settled in the Byzantine Empire. Kuber's move forms the basis of Gyula László's "double conquest" theory. The Avars settled Kuber's people east of the Tisza River, in what is now Transylvania.
