- WRG Biographical Information
The following information is from the Whitney Research Group's page on Robert. See that page for source citations.[1]
Robert de Whitney, parentage unknown, was born before 1224 (and perhaps much earlier), perhaps at Whitney, Herefordshire, and died after 1242. He was probably a 4th or 5th generation descendant of Eustace.
He had a brother Eustace, parson of Pencombe.
Nothing is known of his wife.
Research Notes
In 2015, a EuroAristo leader attached Robert (Whitney) de Whitney (abt.1195-) as father (marked as Uncertain), adding the WRG source at the same time.[2]
The profile had been created in 2012 with the nickname "the Fleming" - and birth in Belgium. Subsequent edits changed birth location to England; I deleted "the Fleming" in 2021. ~ Noland-165, 31 May 2021
One of the WRG source citations was Melville, page 15,[3] which includes a discussion of two deeds, 175 years apart, that had been conflated:
From these it clearly appears that there was a Sir Eustace de Wytteneye in the days of Reginald the Abbot, 1263-84; that he had an ancestor Eustace; that the latter was the son of Turstin, a Fleming, by his wife Agnes; and that said Agnes either owned or had some special interest in the land at Pencombe.[3]
They do not justify the statement that the first Eustace had the name of De Wytteneye. For reasons stated later, it is not improbable that either he or his son bore it; but there is nothing by which to prove it conclusively. Domesday Book, however, gives considerable interesting information about Turstin and Agnes.[3]
