===Life==="He is mentioned among the united gentlemen, in 1314, against Philippe-le-Bel [King Philippe IV "le Bel" of France]. The king, to meet the expenses of the war against the Flemish, had imposed a tax of 6 denarii per pound on all merchandise. This contribution, which greatly displeased the central provinces of France, was the motive or the pretext of several leagues, directed by the great vassals of the crown. The league of Champagne joined that which had been formed in the counties of Auxerre and Tonnerre, and the name of Jean de Maligny appears at the bottom in the act of adhesion. The coalition had, however, no result, the tax having been suppressed and the king having died on the 29th of November of that year. The death of Jean is prior to the year 1323: it is therefore at the latest from this time that Gilles, his son, came into possession of the seigneury of Maligny, which, since the year 1187, the contemporary documents leave no doubt in this regard, had not left the family".["Fragment de l'histoire de Maligny, XIVe siecle", [https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9726219q/f76.item pp. 50-51.]]
Gilles is named "Miles" in this source, but the naming of his wife, Marguerite d'Argenteuil, makes it obvious it is Gilles.], daughter of Jean III, Seigneur de Liniéres-en-Berry, and Florie de Jarez. They had children:

===Arms===Jacques Laurent in ''Cartulaires de l'abbaye de Molesmes, ancien diocthe de Maligny family, which was "d'azur à la bande d'or côtoyée de deux cotices de même", or blue with a band of gold and two cotices of the same color:
:"One more word on the coat of arms of the Malignys. They are found for the first time on the seal of Guy III, Sire de Maligny, attached to a charter of 1219: de... Same pieces on other seals armorials, which belong to the charters of 1281 and 1301. But can the colors be determined? M. de Bastard rightly thought he recognized them, in an escutcheon that used to be seen in the abbey of Pontigny. Dom Viole saw at Pontigny, in the chapel of Maligny, a quartered crest which must be attributed to François de Ferrières, and whose second and third quarters, banded in gold and azure, undoubtedly commemorated the former Maligny house."
:"So the Seigneurs de Maligny armed themselves as; d'azur à la bande d'or côtoyée de deux cotices de même."

These arms are a variant of the arms of the Comte de Champagne, from which the de Maligny family ascended.
